Science

Key Stage 3 Year 7

At Heolddu we are firmly committed to a practical approach to science. With this in mind we start year 7 with a unit on health and safety in the laboratory. This includes the rules of working in a laboratory, the use of hazard symbols and how to light the Bunsen burner.

 

We then cover the following topics
 

• Acids and alkalis
• Particle theory (solids, liquids and gases)
• Cells (including how to use a microscope)
• Electricity
• Elements, compounds and mixtures (including separating techniques)
• Ecology

 

This provides pupils with a foundation of science knowledge for them to build on in subsequent years.
 

 

Key Stage 3 Year 8

In year 8 we build on the concepts learnt in year 7 and we study the following units

 

•Good health (includes diet, exercise and looking after your body)

 

•Light and sound

 

•Forces

 

•Electricity

 

•Chemical reactions

 

Key Stage 3 Year 9

In year 9 we specialise into Biology, Chemistry and Physics with each group having a specialist teacher for that area of Science. In this year we start our GCSE/BTEC courses.

 

Biology

 

In year 9 biology we study classification and the diversity of living things and genetic and environmental variation. We use literacy skills to produce power point presentations, numeracy skills to collect and display data about variations in a species. We investigate to see if there is a link between our height and our shoe size and write up using scientific skills as the main focus.

 

Chemistry

 

Building on the topics covered in years 7 and 8, year 9 students will develop into competent practical scientists while investigating the link between the reactivity and extraction methods of useful metals. Pupils will also consider the environmental impact of various industrial chemical processes. The most challenging aspect of the Chemistry course involves the detailed study of atomic structure.

 

Physics

 

In Physics students start to study heat transfers and work as a team to design a cup that will keep coffee hot for as long as possible. They then present their ideas in a ‘The Apprentice’ style pitch to the class. We then learn about electricity and how the National Grid is able to produce electricity for our homes.
