Information And Communication Technology

At Heolddu we seek to capitalise upon the natural fascination that computers hold for our pupils, and develop the skills required to make all aspects of information technology accessible and understandable. We have a rolling programme of investment in computer technology, which has led to the school having five dedicated ICT suites, a room for Additional Learning Needs support, suites of computers in Technology, Music and Geography, and an ever growing number of tablet devices.

Key Stage 4 Year 10

Pupils follow the WJEC GCSE ICT course, and in year 10 they gain the short course qualification and Essential Skills Wales level 2 ICT qualification.  ICT is a very popular GCSE option, and many pupils will then go on to study the subject at A level.

Controlled Assessment - 60%

The WJEC set a new task for every two years, and recent tasks have been based on a travel agency, a club and an events management company.
Pupils will be required to:

  • create presentations and leaflets for the task

  • show that they can organize their files and documents

  • use email effectively

  • manipulate a database

  • create a spreadsheet for the organisation.

They will have 22½ hours to complete the task under examination conditions between September and March.
Good marks in the controlled assessment will also allow them to gain a level 2 ICT qualification in Essential Skills Wales.

Written Examination - 40%
They will take a 1½ hour examination in May, and will be asked questions on the use of ICT in the home and school.

Key Stage 4 Year 11

In year 11, pupils complete the GCSE full course.

The task involves creating a multimedia website for an organization.

Pupils will need to:

  • analyse two existing websites

  • create a master page and a navigation system

  • use suitable text and images

  • create their own images and create original animations

  • create a movie with a soundtrack.

  • use all of their creations' to build a finished website or presentation.

Written Examination - 40%

They will take a 1½ hour examination in May, and will be asked questions on the use of ICT in organisations.
